The Micro Flannel Reverse to Sherpa Electric Heated Blanket heats up quickly and offers additional warmth and comfort through its weight and texture.

Best Heated Blankets

Better Homes & Gardens / Dera Burreson

Whether it’s the winter season or you just want to feel a little cozier at home, electric blankets are a convenient way to stay warm and cozy. They also have some health benefits and can be cost-effective as well. With so many styles out there, however, it can be difficult to choose the best ones for your space.

“Electric blankets are a form of dry superficial heat which can increase blood flow to superficial soft tissue of the body and relax minor forms of tension and tightness,” says Karen Sorbo-Gangola, a senior physical therapist at Pure Healthy Back Troy.

To find the best heated blankets, we had 11 testers put 27 electric blankets to the test at our testing lab in Des Moines, Iowa. Using a pre-determined methodology, testers evaluated and scored each pick based on seven categories: quality, feel, effectiveness, heat, durability, and ease of use.

What We Tested

We evaluated 27 electric blankets on their quality, feel, effectiveness, heat, durability, and ease of use. For more information on how we tested electric blankets, check out our testing process below.

Why You Should Get It
  • It has eight heat settings and testers liked that there was a bit of weight to it, adding to the overall comfort of the blanket.

Keep in Mind
  • There was a slight stain visible after the spot treatment test.

Our best pick is the Micro Flannel Reverse Electric Heated Blanket, which received high scores across categories. Testers found that it’s soft and luxurious and kept them cozy without making them feel clammy.

The blanket has eight heat settings to choose from, so you can choose your desired feel. During testing, the blanket warmed up quickly and didn’t feel too hot, even on the highest setting. Aside from the heating element, this versatile electric blanket also offers warmth and comfort thanks to its weighted feel.

The blanket is offered in four sizes and seven colors. If you go with a queen or king size, you’ll appreciate the dual controls that allow two people to choose different heat settings while sharing the blanket. Regardless of which size you choose, there’s also an auto shut-off function for added convenience and safety.

Testers found that you couldn’t feel the cords throughout while using the blanket. Though it’s machine washable, the blanket did stain a bit during the spot cleaning test. However, given the quality and durability, testers felt the electric blanket is a good value overall.

How it Performed After Six Months

One of our favorite features on this blanket was the dual controls, which made it comfortable to use when sharing it with a partner. While we could feel the electric wires through the blanket, we thought it was a small price to pay for its soft texture and overall comfort. We also appreciated that the cord was long enough that we didn't have any issues reaching an outlet.

Why You Should Get It
  • The blanket distributed heat evenly and testers did not feel the cords throughout.

Keep in Mind
  • It's recommended you pre-soak the blanket before washing, which adds an extra step to maintenance. Although the control was easy to use, testers noted that it felt flimsy.

For a less expensive style, this CureCure pick is the best version for your home. This soft flannel blanket comes with four temperature settings and a six-hour timer for added safety. There’s also a quick heating feature that provides even heat distribution in seconds.

With velour on one side and cozy teddy material on the other, this blanket is soft and comfortable. Testers tried out the 50 x 60-inch style and wished it was a bit longer. Luckily, it’s offered in three additional sizes, so you can choose a different one.

Overall, testers found that the blanket distributed heat evenly throughout. They also didn’t feel the electric cords, which added to the overall comfort of the blanket. Although the controller felt a little flimsy, it was still easy to use.

The manufacturer recommends pre-soaking the blanket before washing, which adds an additional step to maintenance. However, this electric blanket performed well during our spot treatment test and didn’t leave behind any visible stains, so that’s always a good option.

How it Performed After Six Months

We used this product on a daily basis and were impressed that we never noticed a change in quality, even when we washed it. Overall, we thought the blanket was soft and cozy and we liked that each side had a different texture to it. While we would have liked if the blanket was a bit longer and offered in more sizes, we still loved it and think it's a great electric blanket to consider.

Why You Should Get It
  • In addition to ten heat settings, testers liked that the cords had a flat, thick shape that prevented them from tangling as easily.

Keep in Mind
  • The control screen didn’t light up, which the tester felt was inconvenient if you want to use it in a darker space.

This electric blanket has a soft, warm, and luxurious feel and is a great plush option. The controls are easy to use and there are 10 settings including pre-heat and auto shut-off, allowing you to find the most comfortable temperature. Plus, the wires are hidden very well so you won’t feel them while you lounge.

The blanket, which has ten heat settings, is offered in two colors and four standard sizes. Testers liked that the wires had a flatter shape and were thicker, so they won’t tangle easily. Our only complaints about this electric blanket are that the control panel screen didn’t light up, making it hard to see in the dark. There were also some crinkles after taking it out of the dryer, though testers felt they would likely smooth out over time.

How it Performed After Two Months

We loved how soft this blanket felt and appreciated that we couldn't feel the wiring, which is an issue with some other heated blankets. The blanket features dual controls, which is great if two people are using it. However, if you're using it alone it's worth noting that you'll still have to turn both sets of controls on and adjust them.

This blanket has different heat settings, which came in handy. We found that the lowest setting could warm our bed so we used it the most often, however we liked that we could level up on even colder nights.

  • The control pad features an auto-dimming backlight that makes it easy to use at night.

Keep in Mind
  • Testers found that it didn’t heat up like some of the other picks, so it’s not the best option for the winter.

This micro-fleece electric blanket is soft, comfortable, and lightweight, making it one of the best heated blankets. The blanket comes with two controls for the queen and king sizes that light up and have an auto-dimming feature, so you can easily adjust the blanket’s temperature settings at night.

There are 10 different heat settings, so you can choose which works best for your preferences. There’s also an automatic shut-off that’ll turn the blanket off after 10 hours, adding an extra layer of safety. Testers couldn’t feel the wires and didn’t hear any noise while the blanket was plugged in, a bonus especially if you’re watching television or taking a nap.

It’s worth noting that while it didn’t heat up to the touch, the testers still felt warm and cozy under the blanket. However, this electric blanket may not be warm enough to use in the middle of winter.

How it Performed After Six Months

This blanket continued to work well after six months of use. We liked that the blanket's heating was fairly mild, so we never got too overheated when using it. However, the blanket was a bit too heavy for us, so it may not be the best option depending on your preferences.

Why You Should Get It
  • The control was easy to use and testers appreciated that it had a light to indicate that it was on.

Keep in Mind
  • Testers felt that the blanket was not as warm as some other options. They also found the washing instructions to be complicated.

This Woolrich blanket is the best blanket to consider if you’re going for a faux shearling look. One side is made with a cozy, teddy material while the other side has a flat satin feel, offering double-sided comfort.

This blanket has three heat settings: low, medium, and high. The controller, which is attached to a 3-foot-long cord, also has a light that makes it convenient to use at night.

One tester noted there was no heating element on the border, which impacted the overall heat quality.

Overall, they felt that this blanket didn’t feel very warm, even on the highest setting, and that the actual weight and fabric provided some warmth. However, they felt that it would still make for a good option to use as a throw blanket.

How it Performed After Six Months

This blanket continued to perform well after six months of testing. As the weather warmed up we kept our house fairly cool, so we were still able to get use out of the blanket. Overall, we liked its soft texture and that it never felt too hot.

We washed the blanket around five times and didn't notice any changes in quality. Although the fabric cleaned well, we did notice that it's prone to pet hair that doesn't always come off in the washing machine. Despite that, we'd still highly recommend the blanket.

Why You Should Get It
  • The blanket heats up quickly and the 6-foot cord makes it easy to use.

Keep in Mind
  • Testers found that the blanket was thin and isn’t plush. It was also difficult to release the plug from the blanket.

This electric blanket by Degrees of Comforter heated up quickly during testing and has three temperature settings–low, medium, and high. It also comes with foot pockets for added coziness.

The fabric is soft but rather thin, so it wasn’t as warm as some of the other blankets we tested. It heated quickly, though testers felt that it wouldn’t offer much warmth without the heating element turned on. The controller was easy to use, but it was difficult to unplug the blanket and it took testers three tries to release the plug.

Even though the wires were hidden nicely, testers noticed some loose threads around the opening for the electric plug, which made the blanket look unfinished. The cord was 6 feet, however, which made it easy to plug in from wherever you’re sitting.

Product Details:

Size: Foot throw (50 x 62 inches) | Material: Polyester | Auto Timer: Yes | Cord Length: 6 feet | Care: Machine wash in cold water and tumble dry on low

How it Performed After Six Months

After six months of use, this blanket continued to work very well. We didn't machine wash the blanket per the manufacturer's instructions, though the blanket continued to look good as new.

We loved the blanket's generous size as well as the foot pockets, which came in handy on cooler nights. The material is also very soft and we were never bothered by the wires, though the connector was quite bulky.

It's worth noting that this blanket only stays on for two hours. Although it's a safety feature, keep in mind that you'll have to press the button all night to stay warm while you're sleeping.

The Bottom Line

Overall, the best heated blanket is the Micro Flannel Reverse to Sherpa Electric Heated Blanket for its quality, durability, and cozy feel. Our testers also loved that it heats up quickly and comes with an auto shut-off function for added safety.

Our Testing Process

To find the best heated blankets, we had 11 testers put 27 electric blankets to the test at our testing lab in Des Moines, Iowa. Using a pre-determined methodology, testers evaluated and scored each pick based on seven categories: quality, feel, effectiveness, heat, durability, ease of use, and value.

To determine quality, testers examine the blanket and noted its construction, the materials, and if there were any defects. They also compared the blanket to the manufacturer’s specifications to determine if it was aligned. In the same vein, testers scored feel based on the blanket’s quality and how soft, luxurious, and warm it felt.

Effectiveness was based on how quickly the blanket heated and how much heat it offered. The blankets lost points if testers had any critiques about any settings or features. To score the heat category, testers evaluated the range of heat levels, as well as any dual zones. They also tested any specific temperatures the manufacturer listed.

Durability was determined based on if the blanket was still in the same condition after all of the tests were performed. If the pick was machine washable, the blanket was evaluated to determine if the size and quality remained the same. If a blanket was spot-clean only, a tablespoon of coffee was poured on it. After 30 seconds, the area was blotted with a wet towel to see if it could be removed. If not, testers also tried to use a Tide pen to remove it.

Ease of use was determined by how easy it was to control the blanket, as well as if there were any innovative features. Overall value was then based on if the tester thought the price was appropriate, as well as if they recommend the blanket.

What to Know About Electric Blankets Before Shopping

Size

Electric blankets are available in various sizes ranging from throw blankets to queen and king-size blankets. If you’re looking for an electric blanket to keep you warm and cozy while lounging around the house, a smaller size throw should work just fine. However, you can also choose one to fit your bed and keep you warm throughout the night. If you and your partner prefer different temperatures while sleeping, look for an electric blanket with dual controls.

Material

The material can contribute to the warmth of a blanket, so it’s an important detail to keep in mind. In general, you’ll find that most options are polyester or flannel, two options that will keep you warm even without a heating element.

Auto Timer

Most of the electric blankets on our list come with auto timers, which means the blanket automatically shuts off after a set amount of time. Automatic timers can be as low as two hours and as high as 10.

“Electric blankets must always be unplugged or turned off when not in use,” says Jennifer Schallmoser, media relations specialist at the National Safety Council

Cord Length

Cord length is an important feature to look at when shopping for a heated blanket, especially if you want to use it in bed or on your couch. The length of a cord can be one foot or six, so be mindful of where you want to use it and how far that is from an outlet. Otherwise, you may need to also use an extension cord.

Care

Many electric blankets are machine washable, but you’ll want to check the manufacturer’s instructions to be sure. If it is, just make sure you remove the power cord and controller before washing or drying the blanket.

Other Heated Blankets We Tested

Tefici Electric Heated Blanket Throw

Although Tefici Electric Heated Blanket Throw was soft and easy to use, the thin layers of fabric and low-quality stitching gave it an unfinished look. Testers could also see the wires and it didn’t heat up as much as the other electric blankets we tried.

Perfect Fit Ultra Soft Plush Electric Heated Warming Blanket

This Perfect Fit Ultra Soft Plush Electric Heated Warming Blanket is soft and comfortable, but the heat output is low. It has two controls with long cords that offer more plug-in options, but only one of the controls worked when it was tested. Plus, the cords can get easily tangled.

Lomitech Heated Blanket at Amazon

The Lomitech Heated Blanket is durable and easy to clean. However, the wires clumped together in one area, and testers found that it didn’t offer good heat distribution.

Your Questions, Answered

How long do electric blankets last?

Electric blankets can last up to 10 years with proper care. However, if you notice any brown spots, exposed wires, or uneven heat distribution it may be time to replace your blanket.

Can you put another blanket on top of an electric blanket?

Safety is a key consideration when using an electric blanket, so you’ll want to be mindful of any other bedding as well.

“Don’t put anything on top of an electric blanket, including other blankets or pets, as this can cause the devices to overheat, “ says Schallmoser.

Do electric blankets save money?

Electric blankets are a cost-effective way to keep warm since they do not consume very much energy. Depending on where you live, you may also need to use a full-home heater less, which could cut down costs.
